The polls of the 76th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proved Maldives Foreign Minister as the president of UNGA. The name Abdulla Shahid sparkled on the voting day, the 7th of June 2021. He had a total of 143 votes in 193 membered UNGA. The 76th session of UNGA will begin on the 14th of September 2021. This is for the first time the Maldives had chaired the presidency of UNGA.

The United Nations General Assembly, shortened as UNGA. It is a principal organ of the United Nations among the other six. They are the deliberate policymakers of the UN. It is tagged as the only body of universal representation.

The wheel of the presidency targeted the Asian-Pacific group for the 76th session of the UN general assembly. The Asian – Pacific is second to the African group in the sector of the largest geographic region. Among the 53 state members, Maldives had declared their Candidature in December 2018 for the 76th session.

While considering the normalcy, it took a year for canvassing. In the solitude fray of Maldives, Afghan had submitted its candidature in January. Dr. Zalmai Rassoul was on the other side in the tug of war. He was the former foreign minister of Afghanistan. He was backed with just a vote of 48 on the ballot.

India had publicly stated its support for the Maldives in November during the Maldives’ visit of India’s foreign secretary Harsh Shringla. Again in February 2021, India reassured its support for the Maldives.

The Election win was a great sound of Joy in the Maldives. Maldives President Ibrahim Solith and former president & Maldives speaker Mohammad Nasheed had commented on this victorious Joy of Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid.
